Anne Maheux, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience & Winston Distinguished FellowUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Hello! My name is Anne (“Annie”) Maheux. I am an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Winston Family Distinguished Fellow at the Winston Center on Technology and the Developing Mind. I direct the Social Environments & Adolescence Lab.
I completed my Ph.D. in Developmental and Social Psychology in 2023 at the University of Pittsburgh in the Teen and Young Adult Lab working under the mentorship of Dr. Sophia Choukas-Bradley.
My research examines sociocultural and technological influences on adolescent development. As digital environments reshape adolescence, the SEA Lab delves into how these factors—along with gender roles, societal scripts, and peer dynamics—affect mental health, sexual behavior, and academic engagement. Our work aims to contribute to conceptual and methodological challenges in the field of adolescent digital use, determine longitudinal and bidirectional links between digital media use and adjustment, and uncover the complexities of how individual difference factors shape these processes. Broadly, we focus on understanding and addressing how development unfolds in the digital era for diverse youth with the goal of enhancing well-being for all young people. To achieve these aims, I use novel methodologies and cutting-edge quantitative techniques, and am committed to making advanced statistical techniques accessible to others through teaching and mentorship. I am also passionate about community, social justice, and service work in my research, teaching, and professional roles.
